Droning accordion, misty piano, ethereal vibraphone, atmospheric percussion and intimate vocals show restraint from song structure, melody and a resistance to culture of instant gratification. Zero is a minimalist abstract album of composure. Is it poetry? Is it music? Is it neither and both at the same time? We are submerged into into the ocean–looking up at light dancing through the currents. The works are inspired by zen ink enso paintings, with emphasis on embracing stillness, silence and the concept of “beginner’s mind” made famous in Shunryu Suzuki’s 1970 book Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind. With spare instrumentation on piano, accordion, atmospheric percussion, spoken word vocals, vibraphone, and field recording, the collection of tracks is an offering to experience spaciousness, pause and release.
